Neerja Bhanot-A flight attendant who sacrificed her life #BlogchatterA2Z

Are you familiar with the name - Neerja Bhanot ?

In this post , I will be telling you her courageous and inspirational story .

She was born in Chandigarh and had two brothers. She lived in Chandigarh only for a few years and later moved to Bombay (Mumbai). She completed her education from the St. Xavier's College (Mumbai) .

She wanted to pursue a career in modelling.

She applied for the post of a flight attendant with Pan Am. The airlines decided to have a full Indian cabin crew for the route of Frankfurt to London.

On getting selected , she went to Florida for training as a flight attendant but on returning , she bacame a purser(A person who overseas the passengers and ensures that they are safe and comfortable) while she still continued with her modelling career at Pan Am.

Unhappy with her marriage , she returned home just two months after it .

In 1986 , Bhanot was the senior flight purser on the Pan Am Flight 73 (Flying from Bombay to US).

The plane got hijacked by four men at Karachi (Pakistan) on the 5th of December. The hijackers wanted to free the Palestinian prisoners in Cyprus.

Luckily the plane had not taken off and was on the apron . Neerja was able to inform the cockpit members as soon as the terrorists got on the plane.

The three cockpit members escaped from the overhead hatch present in the cockpit so that the plane could not be taken to Cyprus.

Being the senior most crew member , Neerja immediately decided to manage the situation herself.

The hijackers were targeting the American passengers . One of the hijackers identified an Indian - American citizen . He brought the citizen to the exit , killed him and threw his body off the plane .

Then the hijackers instructed Neerja to collect the passports of all the passengers for they could identify the Americans .

But Neerja and her other attendants , cleverly managed to hide the passports of the 43 other American passengers . She hid some under the seats and some under a rubbish chute .

After a few hours , the hijackers set an open fire and started firing . Neerja opened one of the doors of the plane and helped the passengers to get off the plane.

The hijackers noticed it , held Neerja with her ponytail and shot her.

She was a very courageous woman who saved so many people's life. One of them was a seven year old boy then , now a Captain who describes Neerja as his inspiration .

A movie named 'Neerja - The heroine of the hijack' starring Sonam Kapoor was also released in 2016 depicting her story .

Bhanot has recieved many awards for her bravery and there are books written about her and her life.

A book written by her brother
