India's Blade Runner-Major D.P.Singh #BlogchatterA2Z



Major Devender Pal Singh is a retired army officer of the Indian Army . He is a champion marathon runner and has run 26 half marathons in his career.

You might be thinking that this is an ordinary thing. Read further to find out what is extraordinary about him.

Singh was posted at Kargil during the time of the Kargil war .

On 15 July 1999, Major was still lying on his bed early in the morning around 5:30 a.m. He was preparing to get up when suddenly a mortar shell landed right next to his tent and burst .

A spray of  metal pieces as sharp as knives cut into his body and blood started flowing out of his body rapidly while Singh fell unconscious.

His stomach had been ripped apart by shrapnel exposing his intestines and his leg also got damaged.

He was rushed to the hospital. On arrival , the doctor pronounced him dead but luckily an anaesthetist who was around realized  that Singh was alive .

He continued to fight for his life in the ICU.

Singh had to undergo  a surgery in which his leg had to be amputated below the knee. The shrapnel in his stomach had cut through his intestines and his body could not digest any food.

Intensive surgery was carried out on his stomach . The doctors had to remove many metres of his small intestine . Anyways , he recovered from his surgery.

He boarded out of the infantry because of his 100% disability and shifted to the Army Ordance Corps in a desk job.

Singh says "I had joined the army for adventure , not to sit in an office and do paperwork.So I decided to leave and pursue it on my own".

And in 2009 , he ran his first half marathon - The Airtel Half Marathon . After this marathon , Singh found new meaning in his life.



Singh continues to run marathons and holds four Limca records.He is the first amputee to run a marathon in India , the first blade runner in India , the first blade  runner to run at a high altitude and has also won the Limca people of the year 2016.  He is referred to as 'India's blade runner'

Major leads a happy life , running his half marathons , organizing events for social causes and a lot more . Living with fifty pieces of shrapnel in his body a damaged liver and urinary bladder , Singh says "Everything in my body is broken except my smile".

'If death strikes before I prove my blood , I swear I'll kill death'
