The Lal Quila or the Red Fort of India is something which every Indian has heard of , but the knowledge about the second Lal Quila of India is bound to only a few and I'm going to try and change that !
The Darbhanga Fort of the Darbhanga city , is one of the most iconic tourist monuments of the state of Bihar .

The Darbhanga city, known as the Mithila capital of the state as it showcases Bihar's rich music , literature and art ,is home to many picturesque locations . One of them being the Darbhanga Fort also less popularly identified as the second Lal Quila of India . And a very interesting thing I have heard is that the Darbhanga Fort stands 9ft taller than the actual Lal Quila of India !
The Fort's construction was started in 1934 and a company from Calcutta was contracted to build the fort . The three walls of the fort were constructed but while the fourth wall on the western side was being constructed , India got its independence from the British rule. A new authority came and the High Court stopped the construction.
The Darbhanga Fort is also often called the Raj Quila as it was once the abode of the Royal family of the city .
It has been built with red bricks and the walls are 1km long and 500 m wide . A pit was also constructed around the fort and filled with water to offer protection to the Raj family.
Drawing inspiration from the Buland Darwaza of Fatehpur Sikri , the main entrance of the fort called Sinhala was built .
The fort was home to two palaces out of which one got destroyed by an earthquake in 1970 and the other one is the Rambagh Palace which is a famous place of worship believing that the Raj family used to worship its Kul Devtas there .
The fort mostly lies in a state of despair but it still attracts many tourists . Its responsibility has now been taken over by the Archaelogical Survey Department of India and the Darbhanga Police .
