Golconda Fort - The home of Kohinoor #BlogchatterA2Z
A shepherd boy came across a hill with an idol on it. This information was conveyed to the king who then made a mud fort around the idol. This fort was 200 years later captured by the Bahamani rulers . Around 1538 , their rule weakened and the Qutub Shahi Dynasty was established here .
This is all according to a legend . And because of this story , the hill was at one point of time also called the Shepherd's hill ( Golla Konda in Telugu) And then came the name Golconda Fort.
Within 62 years , the mud fort was expanded and , fortification of granite was done which extended to about 5km in circumference.
In 1687 , the fort was ruined due to an 8 month long siege by Aurangzeb.
The fort has been listed as an archaeological treasure in the official 'List of Monuments'.
Golconda has four distinct forts with 87 semicircular bastions some of which are still equipped with cannons , eight gateways , four drawbridges and numeral royal places and temples .
The fort also had vault where all precious stones were believed to be stored. The koh-i-noor and the Wittelsbach- graff diamond were also extracted from here .
